UK Introduces New Law to Combat Public Sexual Harassment with Up to 2 Years Imprisonment
UK to Implement New Law Against Public Sexual Harassment
The UK government is set to implement a new law from April aimed at tackling sexual harassment in public spaces. This legislation targets intentional harassment directed at individuals because of their sex. Under the new law, perpetrators could face up to two years in prison. Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips MP emphasized the importance of providing a 'clear line' for people to take legal action against uncomfortable experiences on public transport or in public areas.
Rising Crimes Against Women and the Need for Legal Action
In an exclusive interview with Sky News, Minister Phillips shared her personal experience of feeling harassed when a man sat directly next to her in an otherwise empty train carriage. She highlighted that such actions, while not direct assault, can be incredibly distressing. Chief Constable Lucy D'Orsi of the British Transport Police expressed hope that this law will create a hostile environment for those who are predatory and intent on committing offenses, predominantly against women. These types of offenses against women and girls have risen by 17% in the last year, and victims are demanding change.
