Telangana Passes Bill to Cut Salaries of Employees Neglecting Elderly Parents
Telangana's Parental Support Bill Approved
The Telangana Legislative Assembly in India recently passed the 'Telangana Employees Accountability and Monitoring of Parental Support Bill, 2026'. This landmark legislation mandates salary deductions for both public and private sector employees who fail to adequately care for and support their elderly parents. Under the new law, non-compliant employees will be required to pay 15% of their salary or ₹10,000, whichever is lower, to their parents. The bill is primarily aimed at ensuring the dignity and basic welfare of senior citizens.
Key Provisions and Scope of the Bill
The new law extends its mandate to public representatives, government, and private sector employees, obliging them to provide proper care for their elderly parents. Should employees fail to comply, the bill empowers parents with the right to seek maintenance from their children and establishes a formal grievance redressal mechanism. It also reinforces accountability for essential aspects of elderly welfare, including healthcare, housing, and financial security. The State Chief Minister stated that this new law goes beyond the existing national 'Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act 2007'.
