Korea Health and Medical Information Agency Focuses on AI Transformation 'AX Project' in 2026
AI Transformation (AX) Strategy for Healthcare Data
The Korea Health and Medical Information Agency (KHIS) announced its comprehensive artificial intelligence transformation (AX) starting in 2026. Director Yeom Min-seop stated that the goal is to maximize national health promotion and medical field efficiency by connecting medical data with artificial intelligence (AI) services. This strategy aims to establish an AX-based foundation and provide technological support for public healthcare to evolve into a data-driven intelligent system.
Interoperability and System Integration of Medical Data
Despite high electronic medical record (EMR) penetration and nationwide health insurance data, South Korea has faced issues with reduced interoperability due to varying data standards across medical institutions and aging infrastructure. To address this, KHIS will intensify its 'AI-based Interoperability Technology Development (R&D)' project, initiated in 2025, throughout 2026. This project aims to enhance data utilization and inter-exchange by automatically converting diverse medical data into standardized data using AI.
Furthermore, KHIS plans to integrate the 'Medical Information Exchange System,' which shares patient records and test information in real-time, with the 'Health Information Highway System,' which allows citizens to access and utilize their health information. This integrated system, tentatively named the 'Digital Medical Information Exchange System,' will enhance medical service quality by improving access to and utilization of medical data.
