Trump Extends Iran Negotiations Deadline, Pauses Energy Strikes Threat
Iran Negotiations Deadline Extended, Strikes Paused
President Donald Trump has extended the deadline for negotiations with Iran by 10 days and temporarily paused his threat to bomb Iranian energy facilities. Trump announced on Truth Social that, "As per Iranian Government request, please let this statement serve to represent that I am pausing the period of Energy Plant destruction by 10 Days to Monday, April 6, 2026, at 8 P.M., Eastern Time." He added that "talks are ongoing and ... are going very well."
Mediation Efforts and Peace Proposal
White House envoy Steve Witkoff stated that Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey recently approached the U.S. to mediate. The U.S. conveyed a "15-point action list that forms the framework for a peace deal" to Iran through Pakistan, which has resulted in "strong and positive talks." Witkoff claimed Iran is seeking an "off-ramp" from the war and indicated strong signs that they could convince Iran this is an "inflection point with no good alternatives for them other than more death and destruction." A source familiar with the mediation efforts noted that despite public rejections of the U.S. proposal, Iranian officials have privately shown interest in negotiations. However, Iran's top leadership has not yet given a final response to holding a high-level meeting, and mediators are pressing Tehran to agree.
