UNHCR Discusses Afghan, Syrian Refugee Situation; No Mass Migration to Europe Expected
Internal Displacement in the Region
Barham Salih, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, noted that most displacement is currently occurring within countries. He stated that UNHCR teams are closely monitoring the situation. Salih mentioned that Afghani refugees in Iran and Pakistan are being sent back or encouraged to return, and nearly 130,000 Syrian refugees residing in Lebanon have returned to Syria. He clarified that these are not necessarily voluntary returns but are happening under adverse conditions.
Europe Migration Outlook and Call for Peace
Salih affirmed that there are no significant movements across borders towards Europe currently. He stressed that the region has endured too many wars and cycles of conflict. He called on the world as a whole to pay enough attention to bring this situation under control and lead to a lasting peace that is fundamentally rooted in the protection of the interests, dignity, and rights of the peoples across the region.
