Court Appearance and Charges

Zhang Xuesong appeared in a New Zealand court on Wednesday to face charges of rape and home invasion. He is accused of raping and strangling a woman during a violent home invasion, seven months after his extradition from Singapore. The accused reportedly fled to China following the alleged March 2024 Auckland break-in.

Extradition Process

The 41-year-old Zhang was returned to New Zealand last September after visiting Singapore. Efforts to arrest him were complicated by the absence of an extradition treaty between China and New Zealand. His transit through Singapore ultimately allowed for his transfer to New Zealand's jurisdiction.
