Israel Strikes Iran Targets, UN Warns of 'Unmitigated Catastrophe'
Israel's Strikes on Iran and UN Warning
Israel's military reported striking two naval cruise missile production facilities in Tehran, Iran. These facilities were allegedly used for developing and manufacturing long-range naval cruise missiles. The United Nations has warned that missile strikes near nuclear sites in both Iran and Israel risk unleashing an unmitigated catastrophe. The UN rights chief stated, 'Recent missile strikes near nuclear sites in both Israel and Iran underscore the immense danger of further escalation,' adding that states are 'flirting with unmitigated catastrophe.'
Rising Tensions in Middle East and Resumption of Shipping
In western Iraq, a strike targeted the former paramilitary coalition, Hashd al-Shaabi, killing seven people. This coalition is part of Iraq's armed forces but includes brigades belonging to Iran-backed groups. A similar attack the previous day killed 15 Iraqi fighters. This has been the deadliest attack in Iraq since the start of the conflict and was blamed on the US. Meanwhile, Chinese shipping giant COSCO announced it was resuming new bookings for shipments to some Gulf countries, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and Iraq, after halting them due to the war.
Iran Claims Strikes on US Bases and Casualties in Lebanon
Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated they had fired missiles and drones at military bases hosting American forces in Kuwait, Jordan, and Bahrain, as well as targets in Israel. This was reported by the Iranian state broadcaster IRIB. Additionally, Lebanese state media reported that Israeli strikes killed at least nine people in Lebanon. Four were killed in the town of Adloun, two in the Mia Mia refugee camp, and three in the town of Haboush. There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military, which has sent ground troops into its battle against Iran-backed Hezbollah.
