Philippine Military Conducts Repatriation Drills Amid Taiwan Strait Tensions
Non-Combatant Evacuation Drills Amid Regional Tensions
AFP Chief of Staff General Romeo Brawner Jr. announced that the Philippine military is conducting non-combatant evacuation (NEO) exercises. These drills are part of global military operations designed to prepare for potential conflicts, particularly in the Taiwan Strait, to ensure the safe repatriation of Overseas Filipino Workers back to the Philippines. Brawner noted that previous repatriation efforts, such as sending two ships to Saudi Arabia during a past conflict, proved to be very expensive.
Seeking Cost-Effective Repatriation Methods
General Brawner emphasized that utilizing commercial airlines is currently the most cost-efficient method for repatriating Filipino workers. He explained that deploying ships is slow and costly in terms of fuel and operational expenses. Similarly, sending C-130 military transport aircraft would also be more expensive compared to commercial flights. The Philippines aims to not only evacuate its own citizens but also assist citizens of Taiwan and other nations if necessary, reinforcing its leadership role as the current ASEAN Chair.
