Asia Faces Worsening Fuel Crisis and Responses

Global oil supply disruptions, intensified by the Iran war, are profoundly impacting Asian nations. Governments across the region are introducing fuel rationing and usage restrictions to manage the crisis. Queues at petrol stations, as seen in countries like Cambodia, indicate a growing fuel shortage.

South Korea and India's Fuel Restriction Measures

South Korea's government plans to enforce driving restrictions on public servants. Under this system, cars will be divided into groups based on license plate numbers, prohibiting driving one day a week to encourage public sector energy conservation. In India, concerns are rising over cooking gas supply issues, which could force people to use dirtier fuels like timber and cow dung. The Indian government has already restricted some domestic gas sales and reduced industrial sales to prevent further shortages.

Natalie Whiting, North Asia correspondent, notes that these are the latest measures as governments grapple with the fuel crisis. She adds that further rationing will likely be required if the Strait of Hormuz remains practically closed. Some countries have already implemented work-from-home mandates and university closures in a bid to save fuel.
