IEA Warns Middle East Situation 'Very Severe', Worse Than 1970s Oil Crisis
IEA Issues Severe Warning on Middle East Situation
The International Energy Agency (IEA) has warned that the energy situation in the Middle East is very severe, stating it is worse than the combined impact of the two oil shocks of the 1970s and the Russia-Ukraine war's effect on gas. Fatih Birol, the IEA Executive Director, indicated that the current situation could lead to the world's worst energy crisis in decades.
Reopening Strait of Hormuz is Key Solution
The IEA identified the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz as the sole solution to the Middle East crisis. Concerns are mounting that oil prices could surge, potentially reaching close to $150 per barrel or even $200 per barrel, due to pressure from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Experts suggest such an escalation could trigger a global recession, potentially worse than that experienced during the 2008 financial crisis.
