SoftBank to Invest $500 Billion in US AI Data Center Construction
SoftBank Announces $500 Billion Investment in US AI Data Center
Masayoshi Son, Chairman and CEO of SoftBank Group, announced on March 20 his plan to invest $500 billion in constructing an Artificial Intelligence (AI) data center in the United States this year. This announcement, made after a groundbreaking ceremony for a 9.2GW natural gas power plant in Piketon, Ohio, was highlighted by Son as the largest single business investment ever undertaken.
Massive AI Infrastructure and Japan's US Investment Plan
The new project, with a 10GW capacity, is set to become one of the world's largest AI data centers. The data center will be connected to the power plant to supply the immense amount of electricity required for AI system operations. The $500 billion figure also includes the cost of AI chips. SoftBank anticipates consuming approximately 800MW of power in the initial phase, allocating $30 billion to $40 billion for this stage with a target completion by early 2028. This data center project is part of a broader $550 billion investment plan by Japan, pledged to the U.S. by 2025 following a tariff reduction agreement.
