Robert Mueller, Former Special Counsel, Dies at 81
Robert Mueller, the former FBI director who as special counsel probed President Trump and Russian interference in the 2016 election, has died at age 81, according to multiple reports Saturday. Mueller's investigation led to criminal cases against individuals in Trump's circle and earned him the president's lasting ire. Trump posted on Truth Social, "Robert Mueller just died. Good, I'm glad he's dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!" immediately following the news.
Special Counsel Probe and Legacy
The New York Times reported that Mueller died Friday night, with his family citing his battle with Parkinson's disease since last year. In 2017, Mueller was appointed to lead a probe into allegations of Russian conspiracy to interfere with the 2016 election. His nearly two-year investigation concluded there was no conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russia, though it did not exonerate the president on obstruction of justice. Mueller served in the U.S. Marine Corps, receiving the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was appointed FBI director by President George W. Bush in July 2001, serving for 12 years and becoming the second-longest-serving director in history.
