A new Reuters/Ipsos poll shows that 59% of adults disapprove of the war, with only 37% approving. Furthermore, 55% of Americans say they are feeling the financial impact of the war-induced spike in gas prices. Republicans are also attempting to include $15 billion in farm aid into the Iran war package.
Republicans Divided on War Funding and Cuts to Social Programs
House Budget Chair Jodey Arrington (R-Texas) has floated the idea of using tariff revenue, cuts to government programs, and changes to Affordable Care Act cost-sharing reduction payments as potential offsets for the war's price tag. However, some Republicans are pushing back. Senator John Kennedy (R-Louisiana) stated that he would not vote for $200 billion or even $200 without hearings. Representative Lauren Boebert (R-Colorado) explicitly said she would not vote for a war supplemental, expressing fatigue with spending taxpayer dollars elsewhere when her constituents in Colorado struggle to make ends meet. She advocates for 'America First' policies, reflecting a growing sentiment among some conservative Republicans against what they perceive as endless foreign wars and excessive military spending.
