Myanmar Junta-Proxy Parliament Convenes
Myanmar's junta-proxy parliament met for the first time on Monday in the capital, Naypyidaw, since the 2021 coup. This comes five years after the military overthrew the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi and invalidated the 2021 election results. The legislature that convened was almost entirely stacked with allies of coup leader Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.
Limited Elections and Military Rule
Recent elections in Myanmar were held across barely a third of the country, with the army-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) securing seats. The convening of this parliament is seen as an attempt by the military to consolidate its control and legitimize its rule.
