Trump Warns Iran of Oil Infrastructure Strikes if Strait of Hormuz Blockade Continues
US Strikes on Kharg Island and Further Warnings
US President Donald Trump announced on March 13 that the United States had "totally obliterated" all military targets on Kharg Island, Iran's main oil hub. He further threatened to strike the island's oil infrastructure if Iran continues to block shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. This vital maritime chokepoint connects the Persian Gulf to the open seas and is crucial for roughly a fifth of the world's oil supply.
Kharg Island: Iran's Vital Oil Export Hub
Kharg Island is located about 25 km (15 miles) off Iran's coast in the Persian Gulf, opposite Bushehr Province. Despite being a small island, stretching only about 6 km (3.7 miles) long, it handles around 90% of Iran's oil exports. Developed into a major crude terminal during Iran's 1960s oil boom, it remains a vital hub for the country's energy trade and an economic lifeline for Tehran.
