Pakistan Launches Airstrikes in Afghanistan, Four Civilians Killed in Kabul
Pakistan Carries Out Airstrikes in Afghan Border Regions
Pakistan has conducted overnight airstrikes in Afghanistan's capital Kabul and several border provinces, leading to renewed tensions between the two nations. Afghan authorities reported that at least four people were killed and 15 others injured in these strikes. Pakistan stated that the operation targeted militants from the Pakistani Taliban group (TTP). Afghan officials indicated that the strikes hit multiple regions, including Kabul, the southern province of Kandahar, and the eastern provinces of Paktia and Paktika, all located along the Pakistan border. They added that residential areas in Kabul were damaged by the bombings.
Escalating Conflict and Civilian Casualties
Pakistan claims these airstrikes are part of a broader campaign launched last month against militias operating across the border region. However, the Taliban government in Afghanistan denies allowing its territory to be used for attacks. Clashes between Afghan and Pakistani forces have intensified in recent weeks, disrupting trade routes and forcing residents in nearby areas to flee their homes. According to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, Pakistani military operations between late February and early March killed 56 civilians in Afghanistan, including 24 children. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees reported that around 115,000 people have been displaced by the fighting. In late February, Pakistan's Defense Minister warned that the situation had escalated into what he described as an "open war" between the two neighbors, marking the most serious confrontation since a Qatari-mediated ceasefire was reached last October.
