Nepal Election: 'Rockstar' Balen's RSP Rises Amid Economic and Political Challenges
The Unexpected Rise of RSP and Balen Shah
Nepal, traditionally governed by coalition politics, witnessed a significant shift in its recent general election. The nascent Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) secured a near two-thirds majority in the lower house, giving them the power to propose constitutional changes. This unprecedented rise was largely driven by the rockstar-like popularity of Balen Shah.
Despite rarely speaking publicly—making only one speech in eight days during his campaign and refusing media interviews—Balen Shah captivated young voters, with some even reportedly "swooning" or breaking down for a selfie. His signature black blazers have become a trademark, embodying a fresh, anti-establishment appeal.
Balen's Bold Promises and Economic Risks
Balen Shah's campaign included controversial promises, such as sending former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to jail over the September protests that resulted in 77 deaths. A particularly ambitious pledge is to unpeg the Nepalese Rupee (NPR) from the Indian Rupee (INR), a move that experts warn could lead to severe economic instability, potentially causing 700% to 1000% inflation within weeks. Nepal already faces high living costs, with cars costing significantly more than in India.
The global scenario, including conflicts in the Gulf and fuel shortages, adds to these economic vulnerabilities. While the Nepalese stock market saw a 6% increase upon reopening after the election, indicating a desire for stability, Balen's radical economic proposals could severely test this newfound confidence.
Political Dynamics and Potential Conflicts
Though Rabi Lamichhane holds executive party power within the RSP, he has promised Balen Shah a cabinet with zero interference. However, seasoned Nepali politicians express concerns about a potential fallout between the two leaders due to their differing personalities.
Such a split could fragment the party and destabilize Nepal's political landscape, jeopardizing the stability that the country, and Balen Shah's five-year term, currently enjoy. The people of Nepal, however, largely hope that Balen Shah will govern in his unique way, take decisive actions, and lead the nation forward.
