Japan Claims Dokdo as Its Territory, South Korea Vows Firm Response
Japan Renews Territorial Claim Over Dokdo
The South Korean Foreign Ministry has stated it will respond firmly to Japan's latest territorial claim regarding the Korean islets of Dokdo. This comes after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi declared during a parliamentary session on Friday that the islets, known in Japan as Takeshima, are Japanese territory. Takaichi emphasized that Japan would clearly inform the international community of its position and work towards making it possible for a cabinet minister to attend its annual Takeshima Day event in the future.
South Korea's Strong Rebuttal
In response, the South Korean Foreign Ministry asserted that Dokdo is unequivocally South Korea's inherent territory, historically, geographically, and under international law. Dokdo is currently administered by South Korea and maintains a permanent police presence. The Ministry reiterated that the government would react firmly and sternly to any unjust claims made by Japan concerning Dokdo, reaffirming its steadfast sovereignty over the islets.
