Iran's Supreme Leader Warns of 'Blood Revenge,' Hints at Hormuz Blockade
Iran Warns of Hormuz Blockade and Attacks on US Bases
As the Israel-Iran conflict enters its 14th day, Iran's new Supreme Leader, Mostafa Khamenei, issued a message vowing 'blood revenge' just four days after his inauguration. Khamenei described the Strait of Hormuz as a strategic tool for Iran, stating that if attacks continue, they would have no choice but to close the strait, signaling a potential long-term blockade. This is seen as a strong warning not only to the US but also targeting Gulf nations such as Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Qatar, which host US military bases.
Mine Laying Suspected in Strait of Hormuz, Ship Attacks Continue
US and UK government officials have suggested that Iran may have begun laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz. A US war research institute even estimates that Iran has already deployed 10 mines. The Strait of Hormuz is only 33km wide at its narrowest point, with actual navigation channels being even narrower, making mines a potent asymmetric weapon. Since the war began, there have been at least 16 ship attacks using drones or missiles, resulting in 7 deaths. Two oil tankers near the Iraqi coast and a container ship near the UAE coast have been damaged.
US Faces Challenges in Escort Operations Amid Strategic Considerations
According to the US Energy Secretary, all current military assets are focused on destroying Iran's offensive capabilities, making escort operations for oil tankers in Hormuz currently impossible, with an estimated possibility by the end of this month. Although the US relies less on Middle Eastern oil, sourcing from Canada and Mexico, it must consider the energy crisis of its allies and the international oil price situation. US President Donald Trump stated that while rising oil prices could benefit the US financially, preventing Iran's nuclear weapons is a higher priority, thus emphasizing the justification for war.
