Middle East Conflict Shows Signs of Prolongation, Pressuring Oil Prices

Concerns are growing over international oil prices as the conflict between U.S. President Donald Trump and Iran shows signs of becoming protracted. While President Trump emphasized the need to end the war, Iran warned that the world should prepare for oil prices of $200 per barrel. This situation arose after Iran attacked oil tankers and other vessels near the Strait of Hormuz. To date, approximately 2,000 people have died in this conflict, with casualties primarily in Iran and Lebanon. The conflict has spread to Lebanon, disrupting the global energy market and shipping. Israel carried out airstrikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut late Wednesday, March 11, in response to Hezbollah's rocket attacks on northern Israel. Those rocket attacks were retaliatory strikes for the killing of Ali Khamenei.

Philippines Pushes to Strengthen Anti-Espionage Law, Wealthiest Individuals List Released

In the Philippines, Senator Ping Lacson urged the enactment of a stronger anti-espionage law after reports of foreign espionage activities were confirmed. Senator Lacson introduced Senate Bill No. 33 last July, which proposes imposing life imprisonment without parole on individuals who commit or abet espionage, and expands the scope of the law to include advanced technologies. Meanwhile, port tycoon Enrique Razon Jr. topped the list of the wealthiest individuals in the Philippines on Forbes' 'World's Billionaires List 2026', with a net worth of $16.5 billion. He ranked first, followed by Ramon Ang ($3.6 billion) and Lucio Tan ($3.5 billion). Manny Villar, who was ranked first in the Philippines last year, saw his net worth plummet due to real estate asset revaluation and a financial scandal, dropping him to fourth place. The Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) had previously filed criminal charges against Villar Land Holdings for alleged market manipulation, insider trading, and false disclosures.
