Michigan Synagogue Attacked; Iran Vows Retaliation Against US, Intensifies Internal Crackdown
Michigan Synagogue Attack and Warnings in the US
On March 12, a shocking incident occurred at Temple Israel, a synagogue located in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, USA, when an armed man rammed a vehicle into the building. The man, who was carrying a rifle, was shot and killed by prompt action from security personnel, preventing further casualties. At the time, numerous individuals, including participants in a children's program and staff, were inside the synagogue. According to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, no injuries were reported apart from the assailant. The vehicle was engulfed in flames after the collision, and authorities are currently investigating the motive behind the incident.
Federal authorities have issued a warning that Iran could carry out attacks on the US mainland. According to a Los Angeles Times report, Iran might attempt retaliatory attacks through sleeper cells or cyberattacks. Previously, during the Joe Biden administration, the Department of Homeland Security had also issued a threat assessment stating that Iran could leverage individuals within the US for surveillance and lethal plots. US President Donald Trump commented on Iran's potential threat, stating, 'We are watching it very closely.'
Iran Hints at Retaliation Plans and Intensifies Internal Crackdown
Claiming that the US military has bombed Iranian cities, Iran is vowing retaliation against the United States and Israel. Ebrahim Zolfaghari, military spokesperson for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), recently claimed that attacks on oil and gas refineries and fuel storage facilities in Haifa, Israel, were 'significant attacks' using destructive drones. He also stated that five missiles targeted the US military headquarters at the Harir US base in the Iraqi Kurdistan region.
Iran has also carried out a large-scale internal crackdown, arresting dozens on suspicion of espionage. According to Reuters, Iran's intelligence ministry claimed to have arrested 30 spies, internal mercenaries, and agents of Israel and the US, including foreign nationals. Ahmad Reza Radan, Iran's police chief, stated that 81 individuals were detained for allegedly sharing internal information with 'hostile media' and 'enemy nations.' This crackdown is interpreted as Iran's move to eliminate internal 'traitors' amidst what it claims is a state of war with the US and Israel. Earlier, Iran mentioned that Pakistani national Asif Raza Merchant was convicted in 2024 in connection with a murder-for-hire plot targeting President Donald Trump and other figures, and Afghan national Farhad Shakhari was also indicted on charges related to a plot to assassinate Trump. This suggests that Iran is actively responding to both internal and external security threats.
