East Africa Flood Death Toll Exceeds 110; Kenya, Ethiopia Severely Affected
East Africa Flood Death Toll Surges
The death toll from heavy rainfall and landslides that have battered the East African region has surpassed 110. In Ethiopia alone, at least 64 people have died, with many victims succumbing as saturated slopes collapsed in the highlands of the southern Gamo region, according to police officer Abraham Buha. Dozens are reportedly still missing.
Kenya Faces Rescue Challenges Amidst Extensive Damage
In Kenya, 50 people have died, and 17 counties have been affected by the floods. The capital Nairobi, Kisumu, and Narok are among the most severely impacted areas. Nine people are missing, and over 12,000 homes have been destroyed or damaged. Key infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and power lines has been washed away, hindering rescue efforts, while schools and residential areas remain submerged.
Climate Change Fuels Extreme Weather
Scientists warn that climate change is making such extreme weather events more frequent and severe across East Africa. Multi-agency security and response teams are currently active in the disaster-stricken areas to support affected families.
