UN Security Council Adopts Resolution Condemning Iran's Attack
The United Nations Security Council recently adopted a resolution condemning Iran's regional attacks, co-sponsored by 135 countries. The resolution passed with 13 votes in favor, 0 against, and 2 abstentions. U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz announced the resolution's passage, emphasizing that Iran's actions pose a serious threat to international peace and security. Bahrain's Ambassador Jamal Fares Al-Ruwaiei strongly condemned Iran's attacks, stating they violate international law and target innocent civilians and cities.
Iran and Russia Object to Resolution
Iran objected to the resolution, claiming that the United States and Israel are waging an illegal and aggressive war against it. Iran's Ambassador Amir Iravani criticized the resolution, stating it was an abuse of the Security Council's authority and served the political intentions of certain member states. Meanwhile, Russia and China abstained, pointing out that the resolution was imbalanced because it did not name the 'original aggressors,' the United States and Israel. A second resolution submitted by Russia, expressing concern over escalating military tensions in the Middle East, failed to garner the necessary 9 votes and was vetoed by the United States. TRT World correspondent Frank Uccello added that the adopted resolution failed to address the ongoing attacks by the United States and Israel against Iran, and that the military actions of both countries violate the UN Charter and international law.
