President Orders Strict Accountability for Negligence in Muan Airport Disaster Remains
President Lee Jae-myung on the 12th ordered a thorough investigation into the belated discovery of human remains among the wreckage of the December 29 Muan Airport Jeju Air passenger plane disaster. The directive calls for an investigation into the circumstances of the inadequate recovery of remains in the initial stages of the accident and how they were neglected for over a year, as well as strict accountability for those responsible. Senior Secretary for Public Relations and Communication Lee Gyu-yeon announced in an afternoon briefing that President Lee had received a report on additional investigations, expressed his deepest regrets to the bereaved families, and mourned the victims.
Additional Investigations Discover Numerous Victim Remains and Belongings
As a result of additional investigations conducted since the 12th of last month by the Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency's scientific investigation unit and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board, nine human remains from seven victims were newly discovered, along with 648 personal belongings including four mobile phones, and 155 aircraft parts. In response, President Lee emphasized the need for thorough and swift progress in the ongoing accident investigation, despite 15 months having passed since the disaster occurred. Secretary Lee added that the additional investigation of the wreckage is scheduled to continue until the end of this month, and through a meticulous investigation, they will ensure proper respect for the bereaved families and fulfill their disaster response responsibilities.
